How Leopards Hunt



  • Leopards must be within 5-10 meters to catch their prey. 
  • They either stalk and pounce or make a quick running dash toward the animal.

  • Leopards are very opportunistic and only have 50% hunt success rate. 
  • They are the only animal that uses gravity hunting: sinking a killing bite to back of their prey's neck or throat or skull.

  • Leopards will feed on a carcass for up to 4 days. They plucks the animal's fur or bird's feathers before eating it.
  • They are outranked only by Hyena when it comes to the ability to eat rotting meat.

  • Leopards will normally de gut prey before eat. They will usually cover it up or bury the gut so not to attract other predators or scavengers.
  • A single leopard will eats +- 60 animals a year. That is the equivalent of 1000 – 1200kg of meat.
